  1. Keep your heating system efficient and safe

A well-functioning heating system is crucial in cold months. Check your heater or radiator for dust and blockages. Clean vents regularly to improve airflow. If you use space heaters, place them away from curtains and furniture to avoid fire hazards. Never leave them on unattended.

Set your thermostat to a consistent room temperature to avoid freezing pipes. This helps prevent pipe bursts and keeps your apartment warm enough to avoid moisture buildup.

  1. Prevent frozen pipes and water damage

Frozen pipes can cause serious damage, pause in running water and expensive repairs. To reduce risk:

  • Keep cabinet doors under sinks open to allow warm air circulation.

  • Let faucets drip slowly during extreme cold to keep water moving, especially if you go away for a few days and turn your heat off.

  • Seal gaps around windows and doors to block cold drafts.

  • Place weather stripping or draft stoppers at entry points and underneath doors.

If you notice signs of frozen pipes, such as no water flow or strange noises, contact your landlord or maintenance immediately.

  1. Maintain clear and safe pathways

Snow or ice buildup at entrances, exits and stairways can cause slips and falls. Tenants are responsible for their walkways snow removal and prevention.

Based upon weather forecasts, use salt or sand in advance to lower the risk of buildup and improve traction. Clear snow promptly for your apartment’s walkway.

Wear appropriate footwear with good grip and be extra cautious when going outside and snow or ice is present on the sidewalks, stairs or handrails.

Report any unusual or unsafe conditions in common areas to your landlord or building management so they can address hazards quickly.

  1. Manage moisture and condensation

Cold weather often leads to condensation on windows and walls, which can cause mold growth. To control moisture:

  • Open windows briefly to ventilate when weather permits.

  • Use a dehumidifier if your apartment feels damp.

  • Wipe down windows and sills regularly to remove excess moisture.

Maintaining good airflow and reducing humidity protects your apartment’s structure and your health.

  1. Prepare for emergencies and stay safe

Winter storms can cause power outages and hazardous conditions. Prepare by keeping flashlights, batteries, and blankets accessible.
